Television shows like The Tonight Show took Stand-up to television and launched the careers of many stand-up comics. But where did it come from? Stand-up comedy is an American creation evolving from the 1800’s minstrel shows. The term “Stand-up Comic” first officially appeared in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1966.
